TOU isn't automatic — you must exceed your 6-month average × 1.06 to qualify. We monitor your consumption and alert you when you're approaching the threshold, so you can shift more usage to off-peak hours and capture the discount.
▶Explain TOU — When do discounts apply and why?
How Time-of-Use (TOU) Works
KPLC charges different rates depending on when you use electricity. Use more during off-peak hours and you pay less per kWh.

Why Does KPLC Offer TOU Discounts?
KPLC's infrastructure — transformers, cables, substations — is built to handle peak demand (weekdays 6am–10pm). During off-peak hours, most of that capacity sits idle.
TOU discounts encourage you to shift consumption to those idle hours. This improves KPLC's infrastructure utilization and reduces the need to build more power plants and cables for peak demand.
It's like happy hour at a restaurant: the kitchen is open anyway, so meals are cheaper during quiet times to attract more customers.
How Do You Qualify for TOU Discounts?
TOU is not automatic. You must exceed your 6-month rolling average × 1.06 to qualify.
Only the excess kWh above that threshold are eligible for the off-peak discount. The more off-peak kWh you consume, the more of the excess you capture.
Example: If your 6-month average is 80,000 kWh, you need to exceed 84,800 kWh (80,000 × 1.06). Every kWh above 84,800 that you consume during off-peak hours gets the discounted rate.
